Nigerian music star Kcee has opened up about the emotional struggles he faced while trying to earn recognition in the music industry, despite releasing songs that resonated strongly with fans.
Speaking during an interview on Afrobeats Intelligence, the “Ojapiano” hitmaker revealed that his journey to success was far from smooth, describing the industry as one that often overlooked his efforts in the early stages of his career.
Kcee did not hold back as he reflected on his beginnings, stating that his talent and hard work were frequently ignored when he was still trying to establish himself.
According to him, even though he consistently delivered quality music, the industry failed to acknowledge his contributions. Award nominations, which many artistes rely on for validation, were largely out of reach for him at the time.
He admitted that the situation took an emotional toll on him.
“I gave my best, but the industry was not recognising me,” he shared. “The fans stood by me, but I wasn’t getting nominated. I cried. It was painful.”
Everything changed when Kcee released his breakout hit, Limpopo. The song marked a major turning point in his career, opening doors he had long struggled to access.
He described the moment as nothing short of divine intervention, saying it felt like his prayers had finally been answered.
The massive success of “Limpopo” didn’t just elevate his status locally, it also pushed him onto the global stage. Kcee revealed that the song brought him international exposure, with performances and travels taking him to countries like Uganda and even the United States.
Financially, the track was equally rewarding. He disclosed that revenue from ringback tunes alone generated hundreds of thousands of dollars, making it one of the most profitable songs of his career.
Years later, Kcee struck gold again with Ojapiano, a track that quickly gained viral momentum, especially on TikTok.
He revealed that within just 24 hours of its release, the song had already inspired over 120,000 user-generated videos on the platform, a trend that continued for an entire week.
Despite its massive online traction, the song’s chart performance sparked debates within the industry, with many questioning why such a viral hit was not dominating major music charts.
Interestingly, Kcee says his perspective has shifted over time. After years of feeling sidelined by award bodies, he now places more value on tangible success and fan support than on industry accolades.
For him, the love from fans and the financial rewards of his music outweigh the need for trophies and recognition from award schemes.
Before his solo breakthrough, Kcee was part of the music duo KC Presh alongside Presh. The pair gained popularity before eventually going their separate ways in 2011.
Following the split, Kcee built his solo career with projects like Takeover (2013) and Attention to Detail (2017), further cementing his place in the industry.
His efforts did not go completely unnoticed, as he clinched Song of the Year at The Headies 2013—a moment that validated his persistence and talent.
Kcee’s journey serves as a reminder that success doesn’t always come with immediate recognition. Despite facing years of neglect from the industry, his consistency, resilience, and connection with fans eventually paid off.
