Ghanaian hiplife icon Okyeame Kwame has opened up about one of the most surprising strategies behind his longevity in the music industry, choosing to rely less on advice from older people and instead drawing inspiration from the younger generation.
Speaking in an interview on Class 91.3 FM’s Class Drive with Nana Lion, the veteran rapper reflected on a period in his career when his presence in the mainstream began to fade and how he managed to bounce back stronger.
At a point when many thought his influence was declining, Okyeame Kwame took a bold step: he re-evaluated the people around him and the kind of ideas shaping his career.
Rather than sticking to familiar circles, he made a conscious decision to embrace new perspectives—particularly from younger creatives who were actively shaping modern trends.
According to the “Rap Doctor,” working with people his own age doesn’t always bring the fresh ideas he needs to stay relevant. In fact, he openly admitted:
“I don’t like working with people my age.”
He further added:
“I barely take advice from older people.”
For him, this isn’t about disrespect; it’s about relevance. He believes younger individuals are more connected to what’s happening now, making them better positioned to influence current culture.
One of the key pillars of his comeback has been intentionally surrounding himself with a vibrant, youthful team. Okyeame Kwame explained that these young minds bring energy, creativity, and a deep understanding of evolving trends.
Their input, he said, plays a major role in shaping both his music and business decisions.
He even shared a success story of a former social media assistant, Jacob, who started working with him in his early twenties and has since gone on to establish a thriving tech business, something the rapper finds deeply fulfilling.
Reflecting on his journey, Okyeame Kwame acknowledged a shift in mindset that has helped him stay relevant over the years:
“I accept that I have done my part when I was young enough to influence culture.”
“Now I need to let culture influence me.”
This realization, he noted, has been crucial in adapting to the ever-changing entertainment landscape.
Despite his openness to new ideas, the rapper admitted that accepting advice doesn’t always come easily.
He confessed that ego sometimes gets in the way, but he often revisits suggestions he initially rejected and later applies them when he recognizes their value. This willingness to reflect and evolve has become a defining trait of his growth.
Interestingly, while Okyeame Kwame learns from younger people, he also plays a mentoring role in their lives. Many of the young creatives he has worked with have gone on to build successful careers and businesses.
For him, this two-way exchange—learning while mentoring—creates a powerful ecosystem of growth.
In an industry where trends shift rapidly, Okyeame Kwame believes adaptability is everything. His decision to embrace youthful perspectives has not only revived his career but also positioned him as a forward-thinking figure in Ghana’s entertainment scene.
