Gbese Court Remands Abu Trica Again Over Alleged $8m Online Fraud

ABU TRICA

Social media personality Abu Trica, known in private life as Frederick Kumi, has been remanded into police custody once again by the Gbese District Court over his alleged involvement in an $8 million romance fraud case linked to the United States.

The decision was taken on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, when Abu Trica and his alleged accomplice, Daniel Yusif, appeared before the court as part of ongoing extradition proceedings.

The court ordered that Abu Trica be kept in police custody for three weeks.

The case has been adjourned to March 18, 2026, when proceedings are expected to continue. The main issue before the court is whether there is enough legal basis to extradite him to the United States to face trial. Until then, he will remain behind bars.

Background of the Allegations

The case originates from an indictment by US authorities accusing Abu Trica of playing a role in a large-scale online romance scam said to be worth more than $8 million.

According to the indictment, the alleged scheme targeted mostly elderly Americans. Victims were reportedly lured into fake romantic relationships online and later convinced to send large sums of money under false pretences.

The alleged fraud gained international attention due to the huge amount involved and the cross-border nature of the investigation.

Abu Trica was first arrested on December 11, 2025, following the indictment from US authorities.

However, on January 26, 2026, the Gbese District Court discharged him and his co-accused after the state withdrew the initial charges against them.

Shortly after leaving court, Abu Trica was re-arrested by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC).

Following the re-arrest, prosecutors filed fresh charges against him, including money laundering and conspiracy to defraud by false pretence.

His re-arrest brought the case back before the same court, this time with renewed focus on extradition proceedings.

The current hearings are not yet a full trial on the alleged fraud. Instead, the court is reviewing documents and legal arguments to determine whether Abu Trica should be handed over to US authorities to stand trial.

Extradition cases involve careful legal processes, including examining international agreements and ensuring the rights of the accused are protected under Ghanaian law.

Legal analysts say the March 18 hearing will be crucial in deciding the next step in the case.

For now, Abu Trica remains in custody as the legal battle continues.

The case has drawn widespread public attention in Ghana, especially given his social media presence and the serious nature of the allegations against him.
