Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has shared a painful memory from the early days of her music career.
She made this known during an interview with Big Boy TV.
The award-winning star said she was once booed and even attacked with plastic bottles while performing at a school event. Tems said she was excited about the performance because she believed the students would support her.
“I remember one time I was going to perform at my school as an upcoming singer, and I thought I was going to receive a standing ovation,” she said.
But things did not go as she expected.
“But I got booed. They even threw plastic bottles at me,” she added.
The moment was embarrassing and painful for her. Even though the experience hurt her, Tems said she did not stop chasing her dream. Instead, she decided to keep working hard and improving her craft.
She explained that some people may not have liked her music at the time because she chose to be different. Tems said she did not want to copy other artists or sing popular cover songs just to please people. She preferred to stay true to her own sound and style.
Initially, this decision made things difficult for her. But today, she is happy she did not change who she was.
Tems has now become one of Africa’s biggest music stars. She has won major awards and worked with international artists. Looking back, she sees the school incident as part of her journey.
Her story shows that rejection is not the end. With hard work, patience, and a belief in yourself, success can still be achieved. Today, the same type of crowd that once booed her is now cheering her on big stages around the world.
