A video is trending online showing Abusuapanyin Kofi Owusu speaking about the funeral of Ghanaian highlife legend Daddy Lumba.
In the video, he clearly says he will not allow any “celebration of life” ceremony for the late musician. His statement has caused strong reactions across social media.
According to the video, Abusuapanyin Kofi Owusu said:
“As the Abusuapanyin, I will not allow any celebration of life. We will follow tradition. This is a funeral, not a show.”
He spoke calmly but firmly. He explained that funeral rites must follow custom and should not be turned into a party or concert.
Lately, many funerals in Ghana, particularly those of famous individuals, have evolved into major events. There is music, dancing, and large crowds. Some people refer to it as a “celebration of life.”
But the Abusuapanyin believes funerals should be serious and respectful. He says tradition must come first.
After the video was shared, many people shared their opinions. Some people support him. They say he is the family head and must be respected.
Others disagree. They say Daddy Lumba spent his life in music, so music should be part of his farewell.
The Role of the Abusuapanyin
In Akan culture, the Abusuapanyin is the head of the family. He is responsible for important decisions, including funeral arrangements. Because of this, his words carry weight.
For now, his position is clear: there will be no celebration-style funeral.
